This cell line is derived from a transplantable adrenal pheochromocytoma of a male rat; it expresses nerve growth factor (NGF) receptors, and NGF can induce the cells to develop a reversible neuronal phenotype. The cells are capable of producing catecholamines, dopamine, and norepinephrine, but do not synthesize epinephrine.
