This cell line originates from the lung tissue of a female Chinese hamster. Originally named the V cell line, it was renamed V79 by Elkind in 1958 and has been used to study X-ray-induced damage and repair in cultured mammalian cells. This cell line is negative for immunoglobulin production and Epstein-Barr virus expression. It expresses the Fas antigen and is sensitive to TNF and anti-Fas antibodies.
