Lec1 cells are a mutant strain selected from the proline-deficient CHO cell clone Pro-5 that exhibits resistance to phytohemagglutinin. Lec1 lacks a glycosyltransferase known as GlcNAc-T1, which results in the blockage of N-linked carbohydrates at the Man5GlcNAc2Asn intermediate stage. Lec1 cells are particularly useful for studying the effects of altered N-linked glycosylation on the function and compartmentalization of endogenous glycoproteins or viral glycoproteins, as well as those produced by transfection with cloned DNA.
