This cell line is derived from a pancreatic tumor (insulinoma) grown in a transgenic mouse. The mouse carries a pseudogene construct of the SV40 early gene regulated by the promoter of the rat insulin II gene. The cells are rich in insulin and contain small amounts of glucagon and somatostatin. They secrete insulin in response to glucose.
