The BALB/3T3 clone A31 cell line is one of several cell lines established in 1968 by S. A. Aaronson and G. T. Todaro from lysed 14–17 day old BALB/c mouse embryos. The BALB/3T3 clone A31 cells are particularly sensitive to contact inhibition, requiring high dilution for growth and exhibiting a low saturation density. In addition, these cells are highly susceptible to the oncogenic DNA virus SV40 and the mouse sarcoma virus.
