This cell line was isolated in 1983 by Gazdar AF and Oie H from a chest wall tumor of a 73-year-old Caucasian male patient with adenosquamous carcinoma of the lung; the specimen was obtained prior to treatment. The cells express p53 at levels comparable to those found in normal lung tissue, with no major structural DNA abnormalities. They are positive for keratin and vimentin, but negative for neurofilament triplet proteins. The cells express various markers of squamous cell differentiation, such as glutamine transferase activity, production of involucrin, and formation of cross-linked envelopes.
