The HNE-1 cell line was derived from a poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinoma of the nasopharynx. Desmosomes were observed under electron microscopy. The cells have been passaged over 100 times. EBV virus testing was negative.
Problematic cell line: Likely contaminated. The STR profile is highly similar to that of the HeLa cell line and nearly identical to that of HNE-2 (Cellosaurus = CVCL_FA07).
