The human gastric carcinoma cell line NCI-N87 expresses the surface glycoproteins carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and TAG 72, but does not express L-dopa decarboxylase (DDC). These cells exhibit very low activity of vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) receptors and lack gastrin receptors. They do express muscarinic cholinergic receptors. There is no evidence of rearrangement in the genes for N-myc, L-myc, myb, or the EGF receptor. The expression levels of c-myc and c-erb-B2 RNA in this cell line are comparable to those in other cell lines. The following genes are not expressed: N-myc, L-myc, c-cis, IGF-2, or gastrin-releasing peptide. It has been reported that the plating efficiency of NCI-N87 cells is 4.3%.
