The myofibroblastic stromal cell line, WPMY-1 cells, like RWPE-1 cells, originates from the stromal cells of the peripheral zone of the same adult prostate tissue section. The stromal cells were immortalized using the SV40 large T antigen via a pRSTV plasmid construct. WPMY-1 cells, along with RWPE-1 cells and other epithelial-derived cell lines, belong to a series of cell lines derived from the same prostate. Since WPMY-1 cells and RWPE-1 cells are derived from the peripheral zone of the same prostate, the WPMY-1 cell line is particularly useful for studying secretion and stromal-epithelial cell interactions. According to the provider, the RWPE-1 cell line from the same prostate has been tested and found negative for hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
