The cell line (originally named 2T) was established in 1964 by Ponten J and Saksela E from a moderately differentiated sarcoma of the tibia in a 15-year-old girl. No viruses were detected through co-cultivation with WI-38 or by complement fixation (CF) assays for anti-simian vacuolating virus SV40, respiratory syncytial virus RSV, or adenovirus. The cells express receptors for insulin-like growth factors I and II (IGF-I, IGF-II) and osteosarcoma-derived growth factor (ODGF).
