It has been reported that glioblastoma cell lines U-118 MG (HTB-15) and U-138 MG (HTB-16), derived from different individuals, exhibit consistent VNTR patterns and similar STR profiles. Cytogenetically, U-118 MG (HTB-15) and U-138 MG (HTB-16) are highly similar and share at least six derivative marker chromosomes. These cell lines were among those established by J. Ponten and colleagues between 1966 and 1969 from malignant gliomas (others include HTB-14, HTB-16, and HTB-17).
