The SK-OV-3 cell line was derived in 1973 by G. Trempe and L. J. Old from the ascites fluid of a patient with ovarian tumor. SK-OV-3 cells are resistant to tumor necrosis factor and several cytotoxic drugs, including diphtheria toxin, cisplatin, and doxorubicin. SK-OV-3 cells are tumorigenic in nude mice and form moderately differentiated adenocarcinomas that are consistent with ovarian carcinoma in situ.
