The NCI-H23 cell line was derived from the pretreatment tumor tissue of a 51-year-old African American male patient with non-small cell lung cancer. It expresses C-myc, L-myc, v-src, v-abl, v-erbB, c-raf 1, Ha-ras, Ki-ras, and N-ras RNAs. The NCI-H23 cells carry a K-ras codon 12 mutation (Gly12→?); there is also a mutation at codon 246 of the p53 gene (ATC→ATG). These cells express heterologous mRNAs for PDGF A and B chains, as well as TGFα, TGFβ, and EGFR. They are positive for keratins 5, 8, and 18, positive for vimentin, negative for neurofilament proteins, and negative for L-dopa dehydrogenase. It has been reported that NCI-H23 cells form colonies in soft agar with an efficiency of 9.7%.
