In 1985, Shinichi Teshima (from the National Cancer Center, Tokyo, Japan) established the NCCIT cell line from a mixed germ cell tumor of the mediastinum. This pluripotent stem cell line is capable of differentiating into somatic cells and extraembryonic tissues. The undifferentiated cells exhibit characteristics intermediate between seminoma and embryonal carcinoma.
