The ME-180 originates from an irregularly shaped, non-keratinized invasive squamous cell carcinoma colony. In monolayer cultures, belt-like junctions can be observed between ME-180 cells, and cytoplasmic tonofilaments have also been noted. In 1970, mycoplasma contamination was detected and subsequently removed. TNF-α inhibits the growth of ME-180 cells; these cells contain human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA, showing greater homology with HPV-39 than with HPV-18.
