IMR-32 cells were established in April 1967 by W.W. Nichols, J. Lee, and S. Dwight from an abdominal tumor of a 13-month-old male infant. The diagnosis was confirmed as neuroblastoma with partial areas showing organic differentiation. The cell line comprises two cell types: predominantly small neuroblast-like cells and larger clear fibroblastic cells. It has been demonstrated that these cells can be subcultured for over 80 passages.
