The cell line was originally isolated from a primary tumor in 1964 by Fogh J using transplant culture methods and F12 medium containing 15% FBS. Recently, the established cultured cells have been maintained in serum-supplemented McCoy’s 5a medium. This cell line forms tumors in nude mice and can also induce tumorigenesis in steroid-treated hamsters. The cells synthesize IgA, CEA, TGF-β binding protein, and mucin; express urokinase receptors but show no detectable plasminogen activity; and do not express CD4, though they exhibit surface expression of galactosylceramide (a potential alternative receptor for HIV). The cell line tests positive for the oncogenes c-myc, K-ras, H-ras, N-ras, Myb, sis, and fos; overexpresses the p53 gene, and harbors a G.
