This cell line was established by Collins SJ from the peripheral blood of a 36-year-old Caucasian female with acute promyelocytic leukemia. It can differentiate spontaneously or in response to stimulation by butyrate, hypoxanthine, phorbol myristate acetate (PMA, TPA), DMSO (1% to 1.5%), actinomycin D, and retinoic acid. PMA stimulation induces the secretion of TNF-α. The cells exhibit phagocytic activity and chemotactic responses, are positive for the oncogene myc, and express complement receptors and Fc receptors.
