The early reports indicated that the cell genome contained DNA from both the left and right ends of the adenovirus 5 (Ad5) genome. However, it has now been clarified that only the DNA from the left end of Ad5 is present. Cloning and sequencing of the Ad5 insertion site revealed that nucleotides 1–4344 of the linear Ad5 genome are integrated into human chromosome 19q13.2. This cell line is a host for the amplification of human adenoviral vectors. It expresses an abnormal cell surface receptor for vitronectin, which is composed of the integrin β1 subunit and the vitronectin receptor α-v subunit. The biosafety level is Grade 2.
