HBL-100 cells are an epithelial cell line established by E.V. Gaffney and colleagues from the breast milk of a donor with no family history of breast cancer. The karyotype of cultured HBL-100 cells became abnormal by the 7th passage. Electron microscopy images revealed the presence of microfilaments, tonofibrils, and desmosomes in HBL-100 cells. Southern blot analysis indicated that HBL-100 cells carry integrated SV40 viral genes and should not be considered normal cells.
