DU145 was established from a brain metastasis of a prostate cancer patient with a 3-year history of lymphocytic leukemia. This cell line shows no hormone sensitivity, is positive for acid phosphatase, and individual cells can form colonies in soft agar. Submicroscopic structural analysis of this cell line and the original tumor revealed microvilli, microfilaments, desmosomes, mitochondria, a well-developed Golgi apparatus, and heterogeneous lysosomes. The cells do not express prostate-specific antigen.
