The Caco-2 cell line was isolated from a human colorectal adenocarcinoma (primary site: rectum). When grown to confluence, Caco-2 cells exhibit characteristic differentiation into intestinal epithelial-like cells. These cells express retinoic acid-binding protein I and retinoic acid-binding protein II, and are positive for keratin.
