The C-33 A cell line is one of a series of cell strains established by N. Auersperg from cervical cancer tissue sections. From the outset, the C-33 A cells exhibited a hypodiploid karyotype and epithelial morphology. Karyotypic instability can be observed upon continuous passaging of C-33 A cells. The C-33 A cells possess the retinoblastoma protein (pRB), but it is of abnormal size. Additionally, C-33 A cells show upregulated expression of p53, which contains a point mutation at codon 273 resulting in an Arg→Cys substitution.
