This cell line was established in 1986 by Amy Aotaki-Keen from the retinal tissue of a healthy 19-year-old male who died in a car accident. The cell line expresses molecular markers specific to retinal pigment cells, such as cellular retinaldehyde-binding protein and PRE-65.
