The cell line was established in November 1979, derived from the malignant pleural effusion of a 22-year-old Caucasian male with widely metastatic renal adenocarcinoma. The growth of these cells is inhibited by human interferon and they are used in studies on the antiproliferative effects of human interferon or interferon inducers.
