This cell line was established in 1972 by Giard DJ through the transplantation and culture of lung cancer tissue, originating from a 58-year-old Caucasian male. A549 cells are capable of synthesizing phosphatidylcholine rich in unsaturated fatty acids via the cytidine diphosphocholine pathway; they are keratin-positive.
